Ibanez DM1000 Digital Delay

The Ibanez DM1000 (actually made by Maxon) was one of the first of the cheap Japanese effects processors of the mid 80s. It has a certain grungy sound to it, and with all the controls on the front panel (no menus, no one-knob-does-all operation) it is fun and dynamic at the same time.

At first you might think this is yet another BBD-based delay. But no. It has eight 4116 DRAMs inside, giving 16kB of storage. From a cursory glance at the internals it samples to 8 bit (yes, 8!!!) resolution, helped by the compressor/expander to squeeze the most out of those precious bits.
